ZSSMMO: Impact Report and Achievements (2023–2025)

Two years since its inauguration by His Excellency, Dr. Dauda Lawal, Executive Governor of Zamfara State, the Zamfara State Specially Modified Medical Outreach (ZSSMMO) has become one of the largest free surgical interventions ever undertaken in the state — and one of the most successful surgical outreach programmes in Nigeria’s history.

Cases covered include cataract extraction, groin swellings, Vesico-Vaginal Fistula repairs, intersex conditions, and health education for initial intervention. Because some patients required treatment at more than one site, the total number of operations performed exceeds the number of individuals treated.

Beyond the operating table

In November 2025, the outreach also supported World Diabetes Day activities in Gusau, providing 30-day courses of oral hypoglycaemics and antihypertensives to 1,200 patients living with diabetes and hypertension.

Over the two years, more than 296 medical and support staff were mobilised across three specialties — general/groin surgery, ophthalmology, and VVF/gynaecological surgery — including surgeons and ophthalmologists, anaesthesiologists and nurse anaesthetists, perioperative and ophthalmic nurses, laboratory scientists, pharmacists, and health record officers.

The programme has also strengthened local capacity: resident surgeons and trainee gynaecologists and ophthalmologists gained hands-on experience alongside visiting specialists, treatment centres were upgraded with surgical equipment that will keep serving patients long after each outreach ends, and the Drug and Medical Consumable Management Agency (DMA) expanded its supplier network to meet the outreach’s procurement needs.

This data represents the largest and most successful surgical intervention in the history of Zamfara State, and among the most successful surgical outreach programmes in Nigeria.
